It was quite a tight contest. Brazilian athlete Antonio Bravo Neto took the final stretch of the race, with American Dar Smith challenging every inch to the finish line. In the final sprint, the crowd helped the Brazilian to the top of the podium at the University Triathlon World Cup.
“It was wonderful. Seeing all the hard work. We were programmed to win this race. There are still a few more races, this was the first one, I’m very happy that the race went well,” said Bravo.
The American Dar Smith is in the second place, and the Swiss Fabian Meuzen is in the third place. Celine Kaiser of Germany won the gold in the women’s category. Italy’s Asia Mercatelli took second place. The third place was won by Magdalena Sudak from Poland.
More than 120 athletes from 20 countries participated in the University Triathlon World Cup. They covered 750 meters of swimming, 20 kilometers of cycling and 5 kilometers of running. The starting point was Praia de Pajuchara in Maceio.
The competition continues this Saturday (10) with the mixed relay. The start is scheduled at 9 o’clock, and the awarding of medals at 11 o’clock.
The Triathlon World Cup is taking place at the same time as the World Beach Volleyball Championship, which started on Tuesday.
The competitions are organized by the Confederation of Brazilian University Sports (CBDU) and the International Federation of University Sports (FISU) with the support of the Municipality of Maceió.
The beach volleyball competition ends this Saturday (10th).
